MILITARY SERVICE:
In 1988, summoned into military service. First, trained at the
Military Training Center in Sverdlovsk (now - Ekaterinburg) for
six months. Then, served in the Railroad Engineering Corps
(Soviet Army Corps of Engineers) building several segments of the
Baikal-Amur Mainline (Baikal-Amur Magistral, or BAM) in southern
Siberia, Russia. Discharged from military service in 1989 with
the military rank of a sergeant and the Distinguished Service
Medal.
